1, 46, 679 people were deliberately killed in Vanni: Rev. Rayappu Joseph stands by his earlier claims

The Catholic bishop of Mannar diocese, Rayappu Joseph, has once again exposed the fact that 1, 46, 679 Tamil people were deliberately killed by the Sri Lankan government forces during the last eight months of the final war in Vanni in 2008 and 2009.

He said so while speaking to the media today during the rally organised by the Jaffna University Community in Jaffna.

He said he was able to reveal this statistic based on the assessment of the government documents obtained during the war.

“Most of the killings were carried out in the No Fire Zone declared by the Sri Lankan government, after forcing foreign monitors and NGO workers to leave the area” He stated.

He further said those who pretend to be good fellows in the present government had failed to prevent these killings, and this is the reason why the Tamil people have no faith in the domestic investigation and demand for international independent investigation.

Rev. Dr. Rayappu Joseph in his submission to the Lesson Learnt and Reconciliation Commission [LLRC] in January 2011 had first stated that 146,679 people were unaccounted during the final stage of the conflict.
