Two Tamil Political prisoners who were arrested and charged for plotting to assassinate Mahindha Rajapakse, and had been detained in prison for the last 10 years have been released by the High Court in a context where the charges against them being not proved.
The TPPS, Aathithyan (son of former MP Kanagaratnam) and Kokulanath were accused of plotting to assassinate the then President Mahindha Rajapakse, then the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Gotabhaya Rajapakse, and then commander of the Army, Sarath Fonseka at the Independence Square during 2009, while the war was being fought.
The case against the suspects were filed in the High Court in 2011. Senior AAL, K.V.Thavarasqa was appearing continuously for the suspects.
When this case was taken up yesterday, AAL Thavarasa placed forward an argument that, to plot such a thing, at least two persons had to meet in person. But it had not been proved that the accused had met at any time.
Following this the judge dismissed the case for adequate evidence had been submitted to prove the charges and released both the suspects.
