More than 1,000 palmyrahs destroyed in Velanai, accuse the public

Velanai area people have accused that  more than 1,000 Palmyrahs had been destroyed under the guise of Development.

They have also requested that action should be taken against the indiscriminate destruction of palmyras like this.

A private person had applied to the Velanai Divisional Secretariat in December, last year to plant coconut trees in a land in the Grama Officer Division of J/15- Velanai East in the above Division after destroying  300 Palmyrahs in the land.

Palmyrah  Development Board had banned destruction of Palmyrah Plants for cultivation of Coconut trees. The Velanai Pradeshiya Sabah had refused permission to the person based on the ban of Palmyrah Development Board.

However the people now say that attempts are being made to destroy the palmyrahs in the said area.

They have requested that the officials should take care in allowing the destruction of palmyrahs in the area where permission had been refused earlier.
