12th Commemoration of Uthayan Staff – “Vedkai” held yesterday

Media Freedom day of Eelam titled as  “VEDKAI” was held for the 4 year was held yesterday at the Auditorium of Jaffna Library, Presided by Senior journalist N.Yogendranathan.

At the outset, sacrificial flmes were lighted for the Journalists and media workers who had dedicated their life for Media Freedom, floral tributes were paid by relatives and journalists.

Yogendranathan in his address described in detail the tribulations undergone by the Uthayan for upholding Media Freedom.

Volunteer Human Rights Activist Shreen Saroor addressing the gathering insisted the need to sustain the  UN Resolution 30/1. The testimonies provided boldly by the women affected by sexual violence are shelved at the UNHRC. There cannot be any solution without Constitution Reforms.   The Constitution Reform and Transitional justice should be undertaken as parallel processes, she said.

The Dean of the Faculty of Political Science of University of Jaffna, K.T.Kanasalingam talking under the title Tamil Nationalism and Politics of Tamils said that, those who abandon Tamil Nationalism will be forsaken by Tamil People . They will go missing in the wilderness, he said.

Then came TNA Spokseman and MP M.A. Sumanthiran, who said Media freedom is for telling the truth and only truth to the people. He further said that on the basis of the evidences submitted by the  CID, Gotabhaya Rajapakse could have been arrested twice.

The event came to an end with the vote of thanks by the Uthayan Editor.

Large number of people including the President of the ITAK and TNA MP, Mawai Senathyrasa, The President of World Tamil Forum, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel, JMC Mayor Arnold, Members of NPC, Members and Chairmen of LG Bodies, Civil Society Representatives and the public  participated in this event.
