Migratory Birds Visit Jaffna after a long time

After several years of absence migratory birds including Flamingos in their numbers from Australia have come to Kallundai and island sector areas, in Jaffna.

The number of birds which visit the Northern areas for reproduction and to enjoy the climate here was on a decline in the past few years. However due to the regular rainfalls in the North accumulated water areas are to be found along Jaffna – Karainagar Road, Kallundai area and in the areas from Allaipiddy to Naranthanai.

Ash cranes, Sickle nosed cranes and Asian open bill cranes are to be found in these areas. These cranes can fly long distances for their food. They have come in large numbers and to be found here and there in these areas. People are watching them with fascination.

These birds do not eat fish , but eat algae varieties. They don’t build cages for themselves and used to sleep while standing in water, said bird researchers.
