Atrocity of sand smuggling- People prevented from going to their own lands- STF brings situation under control

Under the guise of the owners of lands in Tharmapuram in Kilinochchi living in other districts, sand smuggling from their paddy lands being undertaken liberally.

These owners who are living in other districts held a media conference on Sunday at around 2.00 p.m. to prevent this sand excavations , to find a solution to the illegal sand excavations in their paddy field and to expose the problem they are encountering.

During this conference some persons lighted tyres in the path to their lands and acted in a way threatening the people. The police who came to the spot removed the burning tyres and brought the situation under control.

The STF was called in who arrested one person and paved the way for the people to visit their lands.

It was found that the excavations had been done up to 2’ in several areas and the owners said that these areas had to refilled before undertaking cultivation.

The owners requested the Police to find a solution for their problem and they had handed over list of sand excavators to Tharmapuram Police station with signatures of people.
