130 kilograms of Kerala Ganja in readiness to be smuggled by sea to some other districts was captured at Mathagal, in the Illavalai police area.
Earlier Police intelligence had received a tip off that. Ganja smuggling attempt is to be made from Mathagal beach. Following this a surveillance group was formed under the guidance of DIG, Jaffna, Sanjeeva Dharmaratne to be led by the SSP, Jaffna, and it was making inquiries. They have also commenced special patrols and surveillance along Mathagal beach.
In this context some smugglers who attempted to smuggle Ganja from India through Mathagal, being unable to continue their plan due to the police surveillance had thrown the ganja into sea and had escaped.
35 such packets were floating in the sea and were captured by the Police. Total weight of the ganja captured is 130 kilos with a street value of 13 million, said the police sources. The police has commenced further inquiries to determine who smuggled the ganja and for whom it was smuggled, said the DIG, Jaffna District.
