21,830 acres to be brought under paddy cultivation in Kilinochchi in Sirupokam (Yala Season)

Kilinochchi District  Agricultural Department announced that around 21,830 acres  will be brought under paddy cultivation in Kilinochchi District, this yala season.

Due to the prolonging drought during the past years, in Kilinochchi, which is district with agriculture as the main livelihood, the cultivations in yala and Maha (Kalapokam) seasons were drastically affected.

As water levels of the Iranaimadu and other tanks went up with the December rains sirupokam was undertaken for the first time in history,  68% of the usual sirupokam cultivation.

Releasing information regarding the current sirupokam the Department said that 21,300 acres under Iranaimadu and other large Tanks, 530 acre under the small irrigation tanks, had been brought under sirupokam cultivation while 500 acre under Iranaimadu, 450 acre each under Akkarayan kulam,and Pramanthanaru kulam, 480 acre under the Thiruvaiyaru lift irrigation system, and 2,880 acres under Kanakambihai kulam had been brought under,  ground nut, green gram, and other subsidiary food crop cultivation.
