24th Commemoration of Late Prof. A. Thurairajah

The 24th anniversary of Late Prof. A.Thurairajah, a reputed scientist and a native of Vadamaradchchi, is fondly remembered today by Tamils all over the world.

Receiving his primary and secondary education in Uduppiddy American Mission College, he received his higher education in Hartley College, Point Pedro. Being selected to the Civil Engineering Faculty of the University of Ceylon, he passed out as the best student and with special honors.

“The Calm Clay Model” he designed as a result of his research in Soil Engineering brought him international reputation.

Appointed as a Lecturer to the Engineering Faculty, in 1962, he took over as a Professor in the University of Peradeniya in 1971. He held the Dean of the Engineering Faculty in 1975 and 1982. His researches in these periods paved the way for “Thurai’s Theory” , which is being taught Engineering students even today.

His expert advices to developed countries like Japan, America and Britain, and internally established fame for Sri Lanka.

In 1985 , he took over as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna and led it through a golden period. His term was filled with tragedies suffered by Tamil people. In those trying periods he dedicated him time for the welfare of the Tamil People. His dedication to people of his community and the liberation of the motherland led National Leader V.Prabaharan to confer on him the title of “Manmanithar” citing that, “ He served the soil with patriotism and love for his people”
