Another June 10 dawned yesterday, mourning for 31 fishermen of Kurunagar who were massacred at Mandaitheevu by the sanguinary ogres from the Sri Lankan Navy.
In the early hours of another June 10, 33 years ago these fishermen proceeded to Mandaitheevu to engage in the livelihood giving beach seine net fishing.
It was not past 9.00 a.m. the tragic news reached Kurunagar. Speeding boats brought back 30 bodies. one body was brought around noon.
Dead bodies told no tales. But they had variety of wounds. Some shot, some hacked, some gorged and some with crushed skulls.
The whole village got together and held their last rites. However, who perpetrated the crime must be wandering the length and breadth of the country or even the world, scot free.
The Killed Fishermen’s memories were kindled yesterday at their memorial near Kurunagar Community centre. Mayor Arnold and Jaffna Divisional Secretary S. Sutharsan shared their feelings with the relatives.
