33rd Commemoration of Othiyamalai Massacre

The 33rd  commemoration of the people massacred at Othiyamalai was held yesterday. This event was held at the location where the people were massacred in 1984 in Othiyamalai, a border village of Mullaitheevu District.

In this event presided by the president of the Village Development Society, K.Kanthasamy, sacrificial flames were lighted and flower tributes were poaid for all 32 victims.

It was planned to set up Sinhalese settlements in Othiyakmalai, grabbing 3,000 acre lands of Tamil people, lying along the Othiyamalai – Vavuniya District Border.

In the early hours of 2nd  December 1984, 32 innocent people who were called for a meeting by the Army were shot and hacked to death.

Several people including, Vanni District MP, Santhy sriskantharasa, the Deputy Leader of NPC, V. Kamaleswaran, former NPC Minister of Health P. Sathiyalingam, the Grama officer and the police OIC participated in the event and delivered memorial orations.

A memorial worship was later undertaken at the Othiyamalai Pillaiyar Kovil.
