The Kilinochchi and Mullaitheevu Women’s Conference was held yesterday in the Kilinochchi Cooperative Hall, Kilinochchi.
The Provincial Minister of Women’s Affairs, Mrs. Ananthy Saseetharan participated in this conference as the Chief Guest. The challenges confronted by the women in matters like Micro Finances, Drugs abuse, violence against women and women’s entry into Politics were discussed in this conference.
While it was stated in the conference that there are more than 40,000 Woman leadership families and large number differently abled persons in the North, it was also stated that the more women are seriously affected by the micro Finance schemes.
An awareness creating drama also was staged in this conference.
Speaking in the Conference, Ananthy Sasetharan said that women and Children are encountering several challenges. More women are affected by the micro finance. Only the Central Government and the Central Bank could stop these micro finance schemes.
Several easy-term loans facilities are undertaken at village level, but due to the nepotism of the administrators of these schemes, the real benefit is not reaching the appropriate beneficiaries. The NPC is gearing up to provide large employment facilities and one of them is the Saltern constructed in Jaffna, she said.
