44th Annual remembrance day: 09 killed during the Tamil Research Conference
The day : 1974 January 10th. Tamil people who had assembled in front of the Weerasingam Hall were listening to speeches of the Research Conference. All of a sudden mayhem was unleashed among them by the intruding Security Forces. When some peace was restored 09 people found fallen dead. It was a day when the government led by Late Mrs.Srimavo Bandaranayake decided to commence a Holocaust against the Tamil People.
The memorial for the 09 people erected by intrepid youth in front of the Weerasingam hall was destroyed twice by the Security Forces and they themselves re-constructed the current memorial standing at the site of the genocide.
44 years have passed after the incident, it foretold the tragedy to afflict the Tamil People until the tragedy at Mulliwaikkal. It shall always remind the Tamil people of that terrible night.
