45th Remembrance day of ‘Thiyagi’ was held in Urumpirai yesterday. This event was held at his memorial tower located in the Urumpirai public Market. Following this homage paying was held at his burial site in Urumpirai Vembady cemetery.
At the outset of the event one minute silence was observed. Later the sacrificial flame was lighted by the sister of Thiyagi Sivakumaran. His Photograph was Garlanded and homage was paid.
Several people including MP, Siththarththan , former members of NPC, M.K.Sivajilingam, Mrs. Ananthy Saseetharan, P.Kajatheepan and Members of the Local Government bodies participated in this event.
It is notable that ‘Thiyagi’ Pon Sivakumaran, a pioneer in the armed liberation struggle of the Tamil people, killed himself when rounded up by police, consuming Cyanide, to avoid being arrested alive.
Another commemoration was held yesterday by Students of University of Jaffna in the University premises.
