The Chairman of the Sri Lankan Public Accounts Committee , MP, Lasantha Alagiyawanna has announced that, it had been found out that there are 5 Billion (5x 10 9 ) barrels of crude oil and 9 Trillion (9x 1012) cubic feet of natural gas in the sea beds of Mannar.
This resource could meet the needs of the country for 60 years, he said. This information came out in the inquiries made from the officials of Ministry for developing Petroleum Resources. Around 59 Million to 1 Billion US$ will be needed to acquire this resource and the Ministry of Petroleum Development is searching for suitable investors to engage in oil drilling in Mannar Bay, he further said.
