500-acre Vellankulam Farm released by the Army

500-acre Vellankulam Farm released by the Army

On the basis of the request placed by MP, Charles Nirmalanathan in North – East Development Task Force, and a directive from the President last month, Vellankulkam Cashew Farm in extent of 500 acre was released from the control of the Army.

Thousands of cashew trees and other trees were planted and maintained by the Liberation Tigers in the Vellankulam Farm, before the war.

The Army ‘captured’ it during the war and enjoyed all the harvest from the Farm and undertook several other agricultural activities.

In this context although, 265 acre of the farm was released to the Divisional Secretariat, on the basis of the request placed by MP, Charles Nirmalanathan in North – East Development Task Force, 265 acre were retained by the Army with an intention of  bringing them under the Cashew Corporation and a group officials of Cashew Corporation including its Chairman had come to the farm. However this attempt was foiled by the intervention on MP, Nirmalanathan.
