Two days of pouring rains in Mulaitheevu District have made the water levels in tanks of the District to increase rapidly and six tanks have been breached including Nithikaikulam which was renovated recently and rendering several hundred families into distress.
As per latest information, 647 people belonging to 202 families have been affected by the heavy rains and the resulting flash floods. The District Deputy Director for Disaster Management, said that the people affected by the floods had been lodged in transit camps.
Pandiyan AKulam, Nithikaikulam, Karippaddamurippu Kulam, Sanakkana Kulam, Samanala Kulam, Periya Kulam are the tanks that had been breached by the Rain waters. Several other Tanks also have been filled to capacity. Because of the flash flood, 566 persons belonging to 202 families have been affected in only Odduchuddan Area.
Because, of the breaching of the Nithikaikulam, which had been renovated recently, water level in Nayaru has risen. Puliyamunai area was suddenly inundated due to flash floods reaching the area.
Action had been taken with the assistance of security forces to rescue people who had been trapped at Nithikaikulam. The soldiers of the 64D had been engaged in repairing the breached bunds along with the farmers of the respective areas. Meanwhile the water level in Vavunikulam has gone up to 17.4 ft.
