The struggle of the Iranaitheevu residents entered into its 100th day and special mass is being said at the Iranai Matha Church. The Iranai Theevu people are engaging in a struggle demanding their own lands.
Their struggle is for allowing them to settle back into their ancestral lands in Iranaitheevu which comes under Poonakary of Kilinochchi District and to engage from there, in their traditional livelihoods, including mainly Fishing.
They were expelled from there in 1992.
They say that they are in displaced life from that date to date. “We commenced our struggle on May 1st. Our struggle has enter its 100th day today. From tomorrow the form of our struggle is to be changed. For the last 25 years we are living a paupers life loosing every thing including our land, houses and livelihood. Several Politicians,clergy and ministers have met us and promised that they will get our lands released. But nothing has happened. Our Diaspora brethren have to to take some creative action in strengthening our struggle” they said.
