70 Kgs. of Ganja smuggled from Mathagal to Colombo captured at Vavuniya

70 Kgs. of Kerala Ganja which was being smuggled from Mathagal in Jaffna to Colombo was captured at Nochchimodai in Vavuniya day before yesterday mid-night. 8 suspects who were suspected of being connected to the incident had been taken into custody by Vavuniya police. Vavuniya police and Omanthai police had undertaken a joint patrol, and at around 11.00 to 12.15 a hi-ace van was stopped and searched. Although there was nothing in the open, there were ganja packages hidden in the seats. 70 Kgs. of Ganja was detected in the van and 8 men travelling in it were arrested.

It was found out from the inquiries that the ganja was smuggled from India and subsequently being smuggled to Colombo to handed over to Ganja dealers in Kochchikade.  three of the arrested are brothers. A police team led by the OIC crime prevention unit, S.P.C.S.Senerath.

In another incident Illavalai police had captured 10 Kgs. of ganja and cash worth Rs.7.5million from a person in Mathagal.
