77 Tamil Nadu fishermen who were released by the Sri Lankan government were repatriated with the assistance of the Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday.
The fishermen were from Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai and Ramanthapuram districts Sri Lanka released them following a request from the Indian government. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy allegedly for poaching in Sri Lankan waters. They were handed over to the Indian Coast Guard Ships “Rani Abbakka” and “Amaya” at the International Maritime Boundary Line north of Kankasanthurai by the Sri Lankan Navy. SLNS Ranagaja, and P 481 and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard vessel CG 47 were deployed to transfer the fishermen to the Indian ships.
