Another excess at, Vavuniya/ Samanankulam Kallumalai, of the Archeological Department

People of Vavuniya/Samanankula Kallumalai Pillaiyar Kovil area  have been anguished by the excessive activities of the Archaeological Department .

The Kallumalai Pillayar Temple  was instituted in 1952 and had been worshiped continuously thereafter. At the same time there are archaeological remains such as ancient stone pillars, dilapidated brick remains and building are to be found in the hill on which the temple is located.

In this context, the Archaeological Department unloaded construction materials and were in the verge of commencing some construction. The people who have been worshiping at the Temple had opposed their moves and ma tense situation prevailed in the area.

We were worshiping for generation after generation here, but now the Department is attempting to install a Buddha statue saying that this area belongs to the department, said a native of the area.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Vavuniya South Tamil PS, T.Nadarajasingam, for NPC Minister, P.Sathiyalingam, and TC Member , Chandrakulasingam  had visited the area and discussed about this with the people of the area. They had immediately contacted the Archaeological Department officials and the OIC of the Vavuniya Police.   The OIC had immediately come to the spot and after his coming the situation was brought under control.

When the Regional Manager of the Arch. Dept. was contacted over this, he said that the ruins here belong to Anuradhapura Period and they are taking action to protect and renovate them.them.
