Mannar Fishermen get permission for fishing after 10 years

Tamil Fishermen from Eechalavakkai and Sannar areas who were engaged in fresh water fishing, for many years were displaced during the war, housed in temporary camps  and had been resettled in their areas now.

Although 10 years have passed after war, Fishermen Society of Periyamadu tank did not allow fishermen from Eechalavakkai and Sannar areas to fish in Periyamadu.

Affected Tamil fishermen made representation to Mannar Social and Economical Development Organization(MSEDO) and through them lodged a complaint with Vavuniya Human Rights Commission.

As a consequence of the inquiries on the complaint permission was granted through the Aqua Resources Department.
Although the Department had given the permission, the Periyamadu Association did not allow them to fish. After long struggle only two of the said fishermen were allowed to fish in Periyakulam, while  one was continued to be refused permission.
