Solve the problems of the Fishermen, request NP Fishermen Federation
The Mannar District chairman of the NP Fishermen Federation, N.M.Aalam said yesterday that the Mannar District fishermen are encountering several problems in pursuing fishing in Mannar district, but fishermen from other districts are engaged freely in fishing in Mannar District.
He said so in a media conference organized under the aegis of the NP fishermen Federation held in its office yesterday presided by the District Coordinator , Benedict Croos to discuss the problems encountered by the Fishermen in Mannar District.
The catching of beach de mer and conch shells is banned. However southern fishermen have been given permits to catch “Ornamental fish” and they are catching beach de mer and conch shells under the guise of catching Ornamental fish.
This is the season for catching beach de mer and conch shells, but it has been banned for ordinary fishermen. The Government id discriminating against the Northern Fishermen.
As the Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devanantha should intervene and solve the problems of the Northern Fishermen, they have requested.
