Work on 67′ Buddha statute resumed sans approval
Work on building a 67′ Buddha statue at a cost of 78 Million rupees, in the Nainatheevu seas has been resumed day before yesterday, amidst all oppositions from all Tamil factions.
The activities for constructing the Buddha statue between Nainatheevu Naga Vihare and the Nainatheevu Nagapoosany Amman Temple, was commenced by the Chief Thero of the Naga Vihare last year.
Pointing out the possibility of the Amman temple being obstructed from view and that this Temple could be considered as a temple nearer to the hearts of the Tamil people and requests were made not to construct the Statue which will antagonize the hearts of the Tamil People.
Religious dignitaries, people’s representatives, Social enthusiasts, Educational community and public had protested that this is an attempt to create confusions in the minds of people and change the historical facts.
The construction was interrupted after the Jaffna GA informed the chief priest that the statue should be constructed after approval from Coastal Protection Department.
In this context the construction has been resumed without obtaining approval of the Coastal Protection Department, at it is evident that Navy personnel are assisting in the construction.
