IIGEP example was to insist necessity of International Investigation Mechanism, former Chief Minister clarifies

It is to highlight the necessity of International Investigation Mechanism, that I have cited the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons (IIGEP) constituted under the leadership of the former Chief Justice of India, Justice Bagawathy in my press release issued on Saturday, clarifies the former Chief Minister of Northern Provincial Council Justice C.V.Wigneswaran.,

The Justice has issued a report offering clarification relevant to his report he issued on Saturday. He has stated as follows in that report:

I have pointed out the IIGEP formed under the leadership of  Justice Bagawath , to point out that the argument of the Sri Lankan Government that a hybrid Court consisting of foreign Justices legally in Sri Lanka is wrong.

At no point in my report I have said that a group similar to the IIGEP, led by Bagawathy should be formed to investigate the war crimes and crime against humanity committed in Sri Lanka. The IIGEP, led by Bagawathy was formed to overview the internal Udalagama Commission which was formed locally in Sri Lanka. I have clearly stated in my report that the dissolving of the local commission by the Group led by Bagawathy, saying that the local Commission had not acted in accordance with International standards and regulation, shows  why an International Investigation is necessary in Sri Lanka. Hence the example of Bagawthy Group implies an International Investigation Mechanism including foreign judges.

I am firm and clear in that, an International Investigation Mechanism is the only solution to investigate war crimes committed in Sri Lanka. I have insisted this at several occasions and I have embarked on tasks needed for that. While I was the Chief Minister in 2018, I adopted a resolution in the Northern Provincial Council calling for Sri Lanka be taken to International Criminal Court.

It was insisted in all protest demonstrations and rallies held in the North and East, prior to Human Rights Commission sittings in March this year, that Sri Lanka should be brought before International Criminal Court. I too had participated in all these protests. I have repeatedly insisted in my reports that International Criminal Court. I have also insisted in the letter I wrote to the Commissioner of the UN Human Rights Commission.
