The amount Palmyrah cream obtained from Palmyrah fruits collected by the Palmyrah Development Board this year had reached 70,000 Kgs. mark, up to now, this year, said the Palmyrah Development Board Extensions Manager, K.Kopalakrishnan.
He further said that, it was made possible by the enthusiasm shown by people. The collection this year had increased manifold over the collection last year. Several new activities had been undertaken by the Palmyrah Development with an aim to increase production of Palmyrah related products and expand the marketing opportunities. Accordingly we started collecting Palmyrah fruit and extracting cream from them. The extraction work was taken down to village level and purchase of fruit and extracting clay was done through women Societies and Board Officials undertook field extraction. A palmyrah Fruit was purchased at Rs.5/= and a Kg of cream was purchased at 90/=
Last year we extracted 30, 000 Kgs. This year this has increased to 70,000 Kgs. The demand abroad for Palmyrah related Products. As soon as our cream storing project is completed we will pay our attention on the production of the products.
He also said they are purchasing seeds from people, and up to now they have collected 500,000 seeds.
