Action to construct 600 Km. electric fence in Vavuniya to control elephants

A request has been made to the Government for the construction of Electric fence with 600 Km long fence to prevent human-elephant conflict in Vavuniya. Rs. 2million has been received as the first stage, said the District Secretary, Vavuniya, M.P.Rohana Puspakumara.

Wild elephants, which intruded into the Nedunkerny market have eaten up vegetables from the vegetable stalls and had severely damaged the front of the market.

These elephants are roaming residential areas for last few days and are causing much destruction. Humans fear to move around in the nights. The people of the area had requested the officials to take action to erect electrical fence to prevent wild elephants coming in.

“The electric fence is to be constructed Semamdhu as per request of the people of Semamadu. The electric fence at Nedunkerny will be erected with the next stage of allocation he said.
