A decision has been taken in a meeting of Ministry of Internal Affairs, Provincial Council and Local Government, held yesterday, that the lands occupied by the Forest Department in Kilinochchi/Poonakary/ Jeyapuram area belong to the people and have to be returned to them.
People displaced from hill country due to Race Riots of 1983 had settled and living in these areas. 548 families have been granted 2 acre each during 1984. However the Forest Department had said the area is under their control and stooped the clearing done there.
The people have complained to politician, relevant officers and the Human Rights Commission.
Contacted over this, MP, Sritharan said a decision had been taken by relevant parties to survey these lands and hand over the lands to the people within one month.
