Algae Cultivation in North increased

Algae cultivation had been started in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mannar areas to enhance the livelihood of the people of the Coastal areas of Northern Province.

Algae cultivation was initiated as pilot projects in Island sector, Pooneryn and Mannar areas in 2013 and it was started on a commercial scale in 2014. 350 families are engaged in Algae farming now.

A chemical called ‘Karayinan’ is extracted from Algae and this chemical is used as a raw material in the production of medicines, face creams and pet-food. This is an export oriented crop.
