A complete Hartal is being observed today in the Northern Province, insisting on the release of all Tamil Political Prisoners unconditionally and the revoking the order to transfer the cases of 3 TPPs, who are on a fasting protest. As a part of the Hartal, an attention drawing demonstration was held in front of the Governors Secretariat. All schools, Government and private Organizations and trade centers have been closed.
132 TPPs are in prison now and three of went on a fasting protest, following case was transferred to Anuradhapura courts from Vavuniya on a pretext of security of the witness. The fast has entered its 19th day today. Although widespread struggles were undertaken demanding the un-conditional release of the TPPs, the government did not pay attention on them but announced through the Attorney General that the case will not be transferred.
It is in this tight context that the political parties and public Organizations have put out a call for Hartal demanding transfer of case back to Vavuniya and the unconditional release of all political Prisoners. They have said that the TPPs are not in prison for their own crimes but because they fought for the rights of every one of us.
