Although sufficient rains were received, nobody took interest in saving it, says Met. Officer

The Officer in Charge of the Metrological Department at Thirunelvely, Jaffna, T. Pratheeban said that although sufficient rains were received, nobody was interested in saving the water. Everybody was bent on sending the water away to the sea or away from their areas. This situation should change.

More rains than in previous years had been received in this year. But no provision had been made to store this excess water. If the rain water is stored, it will automatically get discharged into the Sea.

If water get stagnated in low lying are, either areas will be filled up by the people or drained to other areas. This is also a cause for drought This situation is not healthy.

The bottom of the flood channels are being concreted now, preventing the water seeping into the earth.  We should give up this practice, he said.
