Although Tanks were renovated, lands were not granted

Although, the Puthuvedduvan Vanimoddai Kulam which comes under the Thunnukkai area in Mulaitheevu, has been renovated at a cost of several million rupees the lands under the tank were not released for cultivation, the farmers of the area said, and they had requested the authorities to release the land under the tank.

The families which live in the Puthuvedduvan village of the Thunnukkai area depend on Agriculture as their livelihood. Around 27 families currently had resettled in the village but are unable to undertake agriculture.

In a context where several tanks remained un-renovated, request were made for renovating these tanks and give them for agriculture, the Vanimoddai Tank was renovated around two years ago but the agricultural lands under the tanks were not distributed to the landless people. The farmers have requested speedy action to get these lands among landless farmers.

Commenting on this the Divisional Secretary of Thunukkai , S.Lathumeera said that these lands are currently under the forest department and action is being taken to get these lands released for agriculture.
