Antagonising Indian politics and the self- centred superpowers on the Eelam struggle

L. Vijayanathan

The elected Tamil political leaders are deeply rooted with the conception that Eelam people cannot find any practical solution without the support of India. Their line of political activities is centred on this exclusive belief. The purpose of this story is to highlight, how dangerous this conception and expose the real face of India in this pretext.

To assess correctly, the part played by India on the Srilankan Issues, one has to revert back to 4 decades, analysing the political and military happenings of the Tamils’ struggle. As it is not proper to institute a detail analysis at this juncture, the story begins with the period, when the LTTE mounted an attack on the Jaffna Peninsula, which was the cause for striking a cease fire between the Government of Srilanka and the LTTE.

Indian Plot

At a time when LTTE was on a strong footing in their Military offensive, they reluctantly agreed to sign the peace ruse in the year 2000 with the sole purpose of withholding their military advantage and to resist the world wide opposition cropping up against them.

To elaborate on this; at a situation when the LTTE was about to take over, Jaffna peninsula by overpowering the Elephant pass military camp, some of the super powers hindered directly and indirectly to prevent this to happen. Out of such strategies, the following four activities were found to be the crucial ones.

  1. America shifted a war ship close to Srilanka, out of its  fleets already positioned to spy the Indian ocean,
  2. In the backdrop of the undertaking given to safeguard 50,000 Srilankan military cadres got trapped inside  the Jaffna Peninsula, India kept in readiness  their troops at the coastal base at Kochchi, Kerala and the Air base at Thiruvanandapuram.
  3. At the same time, Srilanka resorted to buy time to prepare its military capabilities and equip with the armaments required for the traditional war, such as multi-barrel guns and propellers to be acquired from Pakistan and Zekoslavikiya.  The India ensured this time limit by promising   the withdrawals of Srilankan troops out of the Peninsula, which they  dragged on indefinitely against their pledge.
  4. A warning in secrecy was also issued by the Indian faction to the LTTE to refrain from Military action.

Under these circumstances, the LTTE was forced to retreat from their mission of capturing the Peninsula. If the Peninsula did fall to LTTE, it would have nearly amounted to the achievement of their ultimate aim, which would have brought 90% of Northern land scale under the control of the LTTE. They could have claimed the balance 10% and 40% of the Eastern land by diverting towards the Southern straits, utilising their full force of military power. The resources of man power and ammunitions required for this would have been procured by claiming the Jaffna peninsula.

The India could not digest the accelerated pacing of the LTTE and decided to axe their forward leaping. Realising that further delay would traumatize their interests; it decided to stage their earlier plane of 1989 on a hidden agenda.

The plan was to completely do away with LTTE at any cost. Truly, LTTE itself does not cause concern to the India, but their firm believing on the independent sovereign State is the bone of contention to worry about. It believed from the inception that this firm conviction would propagate the agitation for additional or full-fledged power of devolution among its own states for which they were continuously clamouring for.

Particularly, during the period when India sensed a threat from the LTTE by their presence within Jaffna peninsula, countries like America and Pakistan had their direct interventions. China was patiently observing the outcome without any commitments of its own. China had a long and deep grown friendship with Srilanka. Phasing on the same sphere it continues its activities since “Mulliywaikkal” and followed to-date. The LTTE or their demand for an independent “Tamil Elam” never had any harmful impact on the interest of China. Till the conclusion of the Mulliywaikkal battle, there were no such prominent references appeared in the world Media implicating China. However, India in its endeavour to avoid the overshadowing of the end result of the war over its head, took the trump card “China” in its hand and attempted a broadband propaganda through its local media. India’s bone of contention was that, it is the China that directly contributed to the war and with the aim of reducing the level of China’s involvement, the India attributed helping Srilanka, and again to prevent the overpowering of China in the continent, it continues to extend helping hand to Srilanka.

The dominating world powers and their selfish competitions

Those who hold keen observations of the world orders and the follow-ups of their activities could easily form a clear view of this logic. If one could analyse the prevailing self centred competitions among the super powers of India, Chine and America and their impact on Srilanka, correct conclusion could be formed as to whom our real enemy is.

During the cold war between America and Soviet Union, there appeared (the countries anguished for independence) several new sovereign countries. As a result of the collapsing of the Soviet Union, the cold war came to an end and the America emerged as the world power. It’s military and political domination stood a threat to other countries especially to the European block. Even the countries which had good relationship with America did not favoured it’s the economic superiority.  This gave rise to the   forming of a joint venture called the European Union. America’s unitary dominating stance and the appearance of the United Nations prohibited the creations of further independent Nations worldwide.

It was the time when LTTE raised its head as a powerful fighting force. The successful war fare of Tigers encouraged and induced the freedom fighters of other countries to follow the unique war tactics adopted by them. This caused America to turn against LTTE. Although the America felt that either LTTE or their agitation for an independent Elam did not in any way pose a direct threat to them, the world order referred above could not tolerate the theory of “Independent Tamil Elam”.

Really, amides these three world powers, there exists a dominating trend, over Srilanka, militarily and economically. on the first hand let us deal with America.

True to the fact that Srilanka is favourably placed closer to the crucial world market centres such as India, Pakistan and China; America attempts to place a firm footing in Srilanka. In the wake of china being growing as a world super power, America prefers to keep India in its side, to have a check on China. Moreover, with the hidden plan of disbanding the pre-planned, joint alignment of India, China and Russia, (which the Russia has been planning from the year 2000) America strife to win over India to its side. This is the reason for the America’s increasing influents over India than that of China. In this continuing process, America encounters Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Srilanka and recently the Maldives.

On the other hand, China attempts to make available a supply route to market its produces particularly to Europe, Africa, South America, and Arabia and also an en-route to transport the fuel required for this purpose by availing a firm footing in Srilanka.

India prefers to have Srilanka in its grip for its economical marketing advantages and Regional security. Under the circumstances when the firm believing of the LTTE on Tamil Elam was challenging  and causing the fear of independent cries to spread country wide, threatening the unitary State of India, It felt that the Elam crises was more harmful than the America and China encounters. Thus the two Governments resorted to join hands to eradicate the LTTE.

Really, under this phenomenon, considering the battle within America and China, India favoured the presence of China in Srilanka. It may be difficult to go in line with this assumption. A sensible analysis on the outcome of the World War, taking into consideration the competition among the world powers would reveal the hidden agenda of the Indian politics. The everlasting Indian China border disputes are not expected to trigger a real war at any point of time. Both the Countries are not prepared for this. However, two strategies contemplated by America to weaken China, give cause to worry India. They are stipulated as following.

  1. Mutilate it’s the unitary status.
  2. Control it’s western market

When implementing the first one, it would end up in hindering the unitary status of India. Implementing the second strategy would facilitate China to expand its market in India and around the Indian region. This will leads to the deterioration of the Indian economy.

Looking up globally, the interference of Russia, China, and India are all found to follow a pre-planned uniformity. This reality demands the necessity to joints hand together to face the military power and the aggressive attitude of the western block. Because of this reason the “Trio Plan” proposed by Russia is carried out under a secret agenda without any consents being reached among them. When the pro-American countries operate jointly under a name of “Unite Nations” taking America as a role model in its pace of development, it is not surprising for the above three countries to join hands amicably.

The cease fire truce

By analysing the facts given above, it could be easily assumed how intensively India would have strived to crush our liberation battle. Subsequent to the, year 2000 military onslaught on Jaffna Peninsula, the conditions created, enlightened the LTTE about one conclusive truth. The disclosure was that, the superiority position they gained on war, led them to a disadvantage stage and to an international intervention by which they were trapped into a political trauma, subjected to signatories to a fake cease fire agreement with the Government of Srilanka, solicited by Norway as facilitator which amounted to   the falling into a hidden net laid by India.

The intention of LTTE to become signatories to the cease fire agreement included the following

  1. Temporary relaxation and procurement of armaments.
  2. Clear the terrorist image as much as possible
  3. Seek international acceptance to their civil administrative unit and obtain an interim solution to the Tamils’ political anguish.
  4. Internationalize the Tamils’ issues.

Thoughts behind India

  1. Forcing the LTTE to be the signatory to this agreement
  2. By manipulating this agreement, isolate the LTTE from the capacity of fighting in the long run.
  3. Collect a full information about the LTTE, Weaken them and isolate them from the people
  4. Provide time duration to the Srilankan fighting forces to build up their armament and cadre resources.
  5. Conduct an onslaught at a suitable juncture to eliminate LTTE through the Srilankan forces.
  6. Spy the International network of the LTTE, disable it and trace the shipment of ammunitions.
  7. Identify the backbone of the LTTE senior fighting cadres and destroy them. One of such activity was the execution of Brigadier Shankar who represented the LTTE at the preliminary discussion of the ceasefire agreement, through the Srilankan “Deep penetrating demolishing squad”. His movements were monitored through the limelight of ceasefire talk. His loss backfired till the finishing end at Mulkliywaikkal.

In respect of Srilanka

  1. Rebuild its disbanded Military Capability
  2. In case, the LTTE resort to military onslaught, create an international defence strategy to confront.
  3. Somehow or the other, force LTTE to disarm.
  4. Enforce a half-baked solution on the LTTE by succeeding on the above three.

True to the fact, the LTTE and the Srilankan Government jointly consented to place their signatures on the peace agreement, with the hope of arriving at an interim truce. On the reverse, India which staged this drama did not care anything serious about this. The contents of the recently released report of Norway, under the caption “pawns of peace” well disclose the intention of India.

When we recap the follow up of events after the signing of the peace agreement; The LTTE started directing their personnel for political activities into the military controlled area. They were welcomed overwhelmingly by the mass populace and the students. At the same time the military patiently collected details of theirs confidentially.

The first breach of the cease fire was accounted when the sea boat of the LTTE was attacked at the Poonarin Strait. An LTTE member was killed at this strike. At this event, America released a quick report condemning the action and requested the LTTE to cause patients. The surprising development in this relevant was that the same America which declared LTTE as a terrorist outfit, requested them to be patient without nullifying the peace fire agreement in force.

America’s reaction at this early stage, made the LTTE to build up confidence by believing that America would clear them of their terrorist image. But they realised later that it was only a trap laid out on them   by America.

Up to a few months, things scaled smoothly. But gradually, minor incidents like wearing branded waist belts, hoisting tiger flags were registered as breach of cease fire. The Militants who were on their political tour were placed under threat through the paramilitary outfits. Assembling of political meetings was curtailed. On the other hand, the Military enforced various patterns of obstacles against the public. At occasions, the silent protest marches undertaken by the masses were subjected to assaults, causing   the loss of good number of human lives. The inductions of high security zones Continued widespread   along with the imposture of hidden economic sanctions.

The negotiations, prolonged with increased hold over the LTTE without producing any tangible results.  Under the name of the co-chairs, America, Europe and Japan intruded into the course of the negotiations. They strived to drive LTTE towards disarmament. This situation compelled the LTTE to embark on a rigid decision. Tigers, gradually abandoned themselves from the peace talk. They expedited the replenishment of cadres. Started hidden counter attacks on the Military and the Para-military. The Srilankan Military have already commenced the recruitments of strengthening their cadres, procurement of heavy weapons, stocking of armaments, out leasing of the deep penetrating striking groups with the aim of eliminating the senior LTTE cadres.

In the meantime, European Union who joined as one of the co-chairs, declared the LTTE as a terrorist organisation following the murder of Laksman Kadirgamar. This declaration came into reality due to the pressing of the UN Officials stationed in Srilanka, compounded with the diplomatic pressure and advice of India.

Realising, that the LTTE would regenerate and resort to resuming of the next phase of attack, the India planned to put into operation its next line of program. As a result of the joint plot hatched between India and America, the LTTE leader Karuna deserted to the dismay of LTTE and walk away along with considerable arm haul and fighting cadres (This betrayal also contributed to embrace the destiny at Mulliwaikkal).

When the LTTE was in readiness for a major attack after recollecting itself from the above setback, a natural calamity in the form of Tsunami struck the whole Island causing unimaginable loss of lives and properties.

The LTTE at once abandoned the plan of onslaught and instituted a special task force to rescue the people from the dismay which was successfully executed. This sphere of initiative led to the overall destruction of the LTTE’s future. Under the pretext of “Tsunami redress”, first time in the history of Srilanka, Indian and American sea battalions descended into the country. In the name of nongovernmental organisations, several hundred Spies freely mingled into the LTTE control area. Few NGOO extended some relief measures within such area.

While the LTTE was deeply concentrating on humanitarian aids to rescue the victims, the Srilankan Government was simultaneously deflated its fighting cadres through a systematic recruitment drive. After a while, the Srilankan Military again started the slaying of prominent commanders of the LTTE and its close followers through its deep penetrating squads and white van abductors basing on the spied information’s already collected with the support of the alienated Karuna group. For this purpose, Karuna who was under sanctuary of India was escorted again to Srilanka.

In the meantime, the ships supposed to be the moving ammunition stores of lTTE were destroyed in the International and Srilankan shores with the aid of the information’s collected by the secret agencies of India and America. Srilankan coastal troops, conducted this raid through the two massive war ships given by India and other ships availed by America. It directly used the Indian sea forces as well for the attacks carried out in the International waters.

Beside, several senior leaders of LTTE were arrested in the foreign soil and their assets ceased. This was also made possible by the joint collaboration of activities and sharing of information’s.

Understanding the reality that efforts are being on the move to inflict a mass destruction on them, the LTTE gave up the battle and resorted to defending tactics. One of such ruse they took in hand was the installation of a temporary internal administrative unit of recovery from the after effect of Tsunami which they anticipated to prevent them from voluntary attacks. But this agitation too was made null and void through the hand of the JVP which sought the ruling of the High Court to declare the Unit as   unconstitutional. By a close scrutiny of the recently published report of the Norway and the periodical press releases, it is obvious that India plays the main role behind all these developments.

At this juncture, the Presidential election came on the focus. The LTTE felt that the returning of Ranil wickramasinha as president would accelerate the attack on them and boycotting the election would enable Rajapakse to return and would control the increased international interferences. However the presence of Rajapakse did not matter any difference on the ground situation.

Following this, they felt that inflicting a change on the military outfit by striking on the Army Head Quarters would lead to the dragging of the battle for a few months. But that also did not succeed.

Basing on the minor conflict of “Mavilaru”, the Srilankan Military started a major onslaught with the participation of India, breaching the peace accord. This war proceeded up to “Mulliwaikkal” ending up with the grave annihilation of life and property.

Who is the real enemy?

The reason to spotlight the above entire outcome is that, despite the correct identification of the real enemy by the LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabaharan, he failed to pursue any concrete and timely counter measure; The decision of Prabaharan at a stage not to advocate anything antagonising India, obstructed him to safeguard the sole interests of the LTTE. The main reason for him to hold the conception that, no tangible solution could be reached without the active participation of India, which amounted to the same old theory of the out dated Tamil leaders, and the lack of enough foresight about Srilanka and India, in addition to the inability to harness enough support from the people of Tamil Nadu.

India reiterate again and again that the role of China in the Srilankan political arena, encouraged it’s aligning towards Srilanka. But the real convict of Mulliwaikkal anarchy and the Genocide was no other than India. Beside them, the Secretary General to the UN and Vijay Nambiyar who were holding the required power to prevent this biggest human atrocity, allied till to date with the so called largest Democracy, the bogus India and become the partners to these serious crimes committed.

Still many of our people harbour the idea that leaving India, no solution could be found. Our armed struggle or the one on “Ahimsa” produced failures because of the dependence on India. Our aligning mentality with countries and the lack of foresightedness are the causes of these drawbacks.

Under the presumption, that if the Srilanka agrees to an arrangement to establish two nations within a unitary State, even there it will be no other than India which would register its strong protests and strive untiringly to destabilize the set up.
