Appeal filed for review of ban on Commemorating Mulliwaikkal in Vavuniya High Courts

An appeal has been filed in the Vavuniya High Courts for the review of the ban on Muliwaikkal Commemoration ordered by the Mullaitheevu Courts.

The Vavuniya High Court Judge, Hon. Sasi Mahendran has ordered Mulaitheevu Magistrate Court for the case records of the case be sent to Vavuniya High Court.

The Mulaitheevu Magistrate had issued an order banning the commemoration at Mulliwaikkal, and allowing only Religious observance, organized by the Parish Priest Rev.Fr. Ezhilrajan, near the Mulliwaikkal East, St. Sinnappar Church.

This ban was proclaimed against etching of 500 small granite stones with the names of the people killed in Mulliwaikkal and depositing them in one place as a memorial. This order was made after police submitted suspicion that, the names of LTTE cadres could be among the names. This ban had been renewed once in every 14 days. AAL Guruparan had on several occasions appeared in the court and had submitted that the Law has not specified as to whom could be remembered.

However the Mulaitheevu judge was extending the ban, on submission of the Police  that the commemoration is detrimental to National security,  unity and peace.

In this context, AAL Guruparan appeared in Vavuniya High Court on 12.07.2017 and made submissions relevant to the case. Accepting the case the Judge ordered the case documents be sent to Vavuniya High Court.
