Application for ban on catching Beach de mer, rejected by Point Pedro Court

A writ application filed in the Point Pedro Court for ban on catching Beach de mer illegally in the vadamaradchchi seas in contravention to a court order was rejected day before yesterday.

This application was filed by AAL, M.A Sumanthiran before the Point Pedro Court.

While a ban was obtained last year, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aqua Resources had issued permits this year.

An application was filed on 19th of last month to obtain a ban again. Submissions of both parties were heard last Thursday. Order on the application was postponed August 4th.

It was pointed out by the court that only the Department of Fisheries has the authority to solve any dispute on fishing. Further 3 Societies in Vadamaradchchi has granted permission to southern fishermen to engage in catching beach de mer. Also no inquiries have been undertaken nor reports submitted. The Point Pedro Court pointed out the above in rejecting the application.
