Archaeological Department grabs the lands released by the Army in Odduchuddan

A Sivan kovil has existed for generations on the Odduchuddan – Puthukudiyiruppu Road, at Odduchuddan in Odduchuddan Division of Mulaitheevu District on part of 5 acre title land belonging to a private person.

The area people say that this Sivan Temple had been recorded in the Almanac. In this context, the Army has occupied this land in the past, undertaken banana and high land cultivation and also has installed transgressively, a Buddha statue under a Bo tree found in the land.

The Land owner has made a complaint with the HR Commission asking to release the land. As a consequence the Army high officers  have released the land through documents to U.Indrakumar, the Administrative Officer of the Divisional Secretariat.

The Officers of the Archaeology Department also were present during the handing over. The Army had also informed them that there are some archaeological remains in the land. Although the Archaeological department had to make them available with the land through the Divisional Secretary, without the expressed permission of neither the Divisional Secretary nor the land owner, the Archaeological Department has fenced off around 1 ¼ acre land and had stationed their employees in the piece of land for security.

This land acquisition has not been effected as per State Lands Act, said the area people.
