Army should stop intervening in Civil Activities in the Northern Province: Unanimous decision by NPC

A resolution was adopted unanimously by the Northern Provincial council that the Army should stop intervening in the civil activities undertaken in the Northern Province. It was decided that copies of the resolution be sent to the President and the Prime Minister.

The 122nd sitting of the NPC was held yesterday presided by the Leader of the House, C.V.K.Sivagnanam. The above resolution was adopted in this sitting.

MPcs, Sugirthan and Sivajilingam said that the southern fishermen have transgressed into Vadamaradchchi coast and engaging in beach de mer fishing and this should be banned. And this should be informed to the President and the Central Fisheries Minister, they said. It is condemnable that the Navy and the Army intelligence had threatened the fishermen who fought against the setting up of vadis of southern fishermen on Vadamaradchchi coast. It is an anti-democracy act to threaten people engaging in struggles all the while saying Good Governance.

When a Vihare was constructed in Kokkilai, I said here that a vihare will also come up in Nallur. Now the Sinhalese fishermen had come from Mullaitheevu road up to Vadamaradchchi. At least now, we should take some meaningful act said Sugirthan. Finally Minister of Education Sarveswaran proposed that as Army and Navy are assisting such transgression, they should be banned from intervening in local Civil Affairs. This resolution was adopted unanimously adopted.
