Arrest, torture and killing of youth in Jaffna – Officer Commanding, soldier sentenced to death

Trincomalee High Court Judge, M.Elancheliyan has sentenced an Officer Commanding and a soldier to death, for arresting, Torturing and killing a Tamil youth in Jaffna, after 20 years.

20 years ago ( 9.9.1998) a youth from Kurunagar, Jaffna, Anton Kunasekaram was arrested by the Army and two  days later his dead body was handed over to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

A case was filed with the Officer Commanding  of the 51 camp cited as the 1st Accused, the Officer Commanding of the 512 Brigade cited as the 2nd accused and an Officer from Thirunelvely camp, as the 3rd accused.

The Court had examined the arguments of the AAL of the Accused and dated yesterday for sentencing.

As per this the justice announced his judgment yesterday in open court.

As there no adequate evidence to show that the Commanding Officer of the 51 D, was connected to the Torture and killing of the Youth, he was released from the case.

When the testimonies were examined, it was found out the charges against the 2nd and 3rd accused had been proved beyond reasonable doubt.  Justice Elancheliyan sentenced death by hanging at a time and place the president likes.
