We asked for written Assurance from Mahindha , But he refused, says Sampanthan

We asked for written Assurance from Mahindha , But he refused, says Sampanthan

“I told Mahindha to put forward an assurance on Political Solution and we shall consider supporting you if you will give  a written assurance on how you will implement it and the time frame for implement it. He said he will contact us. But he had not done so.”, said the Leader of the Opposition and TNA, Era Sampanthan.

When he was asked about the background of announcing to oppose Mahindha in the “ No- confidence Motion”, he said as above. Some questions that were put to him and his answers are as  follows:

Q: TNA has decided to vote against Mahindha’s Government in the Parliament. What is the background of this decision?

The President has no power to remove the Prime Minister after the 19th Amendment. If a Prime Minister is removed through proper methodology, a vacancy will occur and a new Prime Minister could be appointed. He has appointed a new Prime Minister without a vacancy occurring. He adjourned the Parliament. The person, who took over as the Prime Minister had to get the confidence vote, in the Parliament.

We decided that we cannot accept the above activities of the President. So we have come to a decision to vote against Mahindha during the No-confidence motion.

  1. After the President removing the Prime Minister you have met him. What are the matters discussed in this meeting?

We spoke about several things including the Political Solution. I also spoke about the above and expressed our opinion about it.

Q: You have met Mahindha at his home. It is reported that he solicited your support?

Yes he asked for our support. But I said it will be difficult to give him the support. I said that, if he will place his stance forward regarding the Political Solution, I could speak to the other member and take a decision. I told Mahindha to put forward an assurance on Political Solution and we shall consider supporting you if you will give a written assurance on how you will implement it and the time frame for implement it. He said he will contact us. But he had not done so.

Q: You have asked for political solution. Could you tell us what you have meant by that?

A reliable and firm power devolution; this devolution given on a regional basis should be irrevocable; a region or Province should be able to implement it by its own discretion. No situation should exist where the Central Government could intervene in that. The daily needs  of the people should be attained through the representatives they elect, through a Regional cabinet, through a Regional Council. That is the solution proposal.

Q: President had said recently that North and East will not be merged and there is no possibility of granting Federal System ?

This is not acceptable. These are things that should be negotiated. We have accepted this. Let’s see what will happen.

Q: Have you given the demand to Ranil?

There is no necessity  for that, as we know that something is happening in the UNP Government regarding a political Solution.
