Attempt to acquire land for Naval base in Karainagar thwarted

A survey work that was to be carried out with the intention of expropriating 50 acres of land, including public lands, to the Karainagar naval base  in Jaffna district was thwarted today.

The survey attempt  was halted by opposition from landowners, politicians and the public.

MPs Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam, S. Sritharan, S. Kajendran, former MPs E. Saravanapavan, former Provincial Councillors B. Gajadeepan and Vindan Kanakaratnam gathered on the spot.

The Survey Department officials insisted that the land be surveyed. He mentioned that he had to do his duty in the capacity of a civil servant.   However, due to opposition, they left the place.
