An attention drawing struggle was staged yesterday between the Jaffna Secretariat and the Governor’s office condemning the price reduction for beer announced in the budget and demanding the increase of beer prices immediately.
The struggle was organized by the Federation of Civil Organizations which demanded for the following:
- We cannot accept the price reduction for beer, while the President is proclaiming that he is endeavouring to create a ‘country sans intoxication’.
- In the context of reports saying that drugs and liquor are behind the violence in the peninsula, this price reduction will aggravate the situation.
- The President should intervene in this and immediately increase the beer prices and implement his ‘country sans intoxication’ policy in full in tot’o.
The strugglers then handed over their memorandum containing their demands, for the President at the Governor’s Secretariat and to the Additional District Secretary, Jaffna.
Several people including MPc, Sugirthan and the representatives of NP Public Organizations participated in this demonstration.
