Attention drawing struggle undertaken yesterday demanding release of Lands of Tamil People

An attention drawing demonstration demanding the release of lands seized by the Security Forces and the Wild Life Department in the North was held yesterday in front of Jaffna District Secretariat.

A memorandum containing the land problems of the northern people was handed over to the Government Agent, in this struggle organized by the National Fishermen Cooperation Movement.

* 3,919 acre lands have to be released in the villages of Myliddy, Palaly, vayavilan Thaiyiddy, Oorany, and Kankesanthurai in the Vali North.

* The Wild Life Department has acquired 24,000 acre for National Park in Chundikulam, Pokkaruppu, Mulliyan, and vettilaikerny in Vadamaradchchi East. More than 1000 families are living here. More than 600 acre of paddy lands, agricultural lands , 4 schools, 5 pre schools,4 churches , more than 10 Hindu Temples and 51  ‘Karaivalai Padukal’ are in the acquired area.

* Navy has occupied more than 600 acre in Velanai area.

The army has reoccupied certain lands. People are encountering several problems due to this.

Hence, action should be taken to release the lands of the people so that they could undertake their livelihood and provide them with facilities so that they could live in peace with their basic  rights, the memorandum said.
