The farmers of Vanni pawned the jewelry of their wives and children to engage in agriculture. But due to the prolonged drought they had lost their income and the means to redeem the pawned jewels. In this context a particular Bank in Vanni had made arrangements to sell the jewels by auction.
The farmers alerted MP Selvam Adaikalanathan, who in turn had contacted the Minister of Commerce, Malik Samarawickremasinghe, who immediately intervened and stopped the jewels being sold by auction. The Bank administration had agreed to give one month’s grace period to the farmers as per their request.
