Basic facilities not provided – people abandoning villages in backward areas of Mannar

As the basic needs of the agricultural villages such as Aathimodai and Koorai located in the backward areas of Mannar have not been provided, the number of families living in theses villages had dropped from more than 400 to less than 150.

More than 400 families were living in Aathimodai, Koorai and seethe Vinayagar Puram coming under Manthai West Divisional Secretary Division in Mannar District. Because of the lack of facilities, more than 250 families had displaced to several other areas. The Aathimodai School which operated here during the war period is now operating at Kalliyady School while the Koorai School is still operating with less facilities and less students.

Only 13 of the 60 families living at Aathimodai, 38 of the more 120 families living in Seethu Vinayagarpuram and 100 of the 200 families living in Koorai  are still remaining. The main road to this village has not been repaired so far. The people living here said they have to encounter hindrance from elephants, and lack of transport and medical facilities.
