The Bicentenary celebrations of the first college to be established in the Northern Province, took place recently, under the hegemony of the Principal of the College Mr. S.K.Ezhilventhan.
President Maithripala Sirisena graced the occasion. He was warmly received by the students, who had a cordial discussion. Principal presented a book released to mark the Jaffna Central College Scout Centenary Celebrations. A commemorative stamp also issued to mark the event. The Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V. Wigneswaran, State Education Minister, V. Radhakrishnan, State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran, MPs Douglas Devananda and Angajan Ramanathan, and many others participated in this event.
This National school, named as Jaffna Central College is one of the oldest colleges of Sri Lanka. This college was founded in 1816. It was known as Jaffna Wesleyan English School. Later 1825 was moved to the location Vembadi Girls’ college is situated now. Its name was changed to Jaffna Central School by Rev. Peter Percival of the Wesleyan Mission.
Jaffna Central College has the pride of introducing Football, Cricket, Scouts Movement and Commerce Education to Northern Province.
