Tension was created in the premises of Neeraviyadi Pillaiyar Temple located in Naayaaru of Mulaitheevu, when the Monk in charge of the Buddhist temple constructed by force in the Neeraviyadi Pillaiyar Temple land and more than 40 persons including Buddhist Monks from south tried to prevent Tamil People from the area from engaging in Pongal worship.
In a context where it was announced that the Annual Pongal worship and Alms giving were to be held yesterday by the people of Chemmalai at the Neeraviyadi Pillaiya Temple located at the Palaya Chemmalai Naayaaru area of Mulaitheevu District, when the people of Chemmalai went there and were engaging in Pongal Worship yesterday, more than 40 persons including Buddhist monks led by a Buddhist Monk who had encroached a part of the Neeraviyadi Pillaiyar Temple land and had built a Buddhist Temple, had engaged in altercations with the Tamil people who were engaging in Pongal Worship and tried prevent them from performing Pongal rites, a confrontational situation was created among the two factions.
The Officers from the nearby Army Camp had come to the spot and tried to pacify the Monk’s faction. Mean while the poice who came to the spot had discussions with the chief monk and had ordered the Tamil people that they cannot use loudspeakers and had posed several hindrances to the Tamil people.
The persons who came from the south had argued that the area is Buddhist Temple area and the Tamils cannot hold Pongal worship there. However following police interventions the situation was brought under control and the Tamil people were able to continue their worship.
