The Buddhist Priests have expressed strong opposition against settling the Pakistan and Afghanistan refugees in Vavuniya. Tension prevailed in the area when the priests attempted to enter the camp where the refugees are housed.
Following meeting attended by representatives of Buddhist, Hindu and Christian religions, where a decision was taken that, the Refugees should not be allowed to stay in Vavuniya. Thereafter they proceeded to the Poonthottam refugee camp where the refugees were accommodated. The police had not allowed them to enter the camp area. They have dispersed saying that they will undertake protest struggles unless their demands are met in a few days.
