Black July commemoration in University of Jaffna

Sentimental homage was paid to the kins killed in the race riots of 1983 July was held in University of Jaffna.

35 years have passed after the July riots or the Black July were unleashed against the Tamil People. It commenced on the night of July 24th , spread over all the parts of the island and lasted more than a week. More than 300 were killed in the riots. Thousands of houses and business establishments of exclusively Tamils were destroyed by fire. The damages were estimated at 300 million dollars at the values prevailing at that time. Tamil people in large numbers started migrating to India and western world in the aftermath of Black July. The Civil war also went into full swing after it.

In a context of 35 years being completed after the Black July, Sentimental homages had been paid to killed kins in the University of Jaffna and several other places in the North and East. In the commemoration held at the University of Jaffna, Students got together to light memorial flame and to pay their homage. More than a hundred students paid homage with lighted candles.
