Communist Party Chief DEW Gunasekera has charged that it was the extremism of the Bodu Bala Sena and the inaction of the then government to deal with such acts thatcaused irrevocable damage to Rajapaksa’s re-election campaign. In fact, the BBS delivered a knockout blow to the former President, though the public perception was that influential sections of the UPFA were playing ball with the organization. Then another factor for the defeat of Rajapakse was the propaganda campaign carried out from Colombo.
He was speaking to the media at the N.M. Perera centre, Borella on behalf of the Socialist Alliance (SA) comprising the CP. LSSP and Vasudeva Nanayakkara’s Democratic Left Front (DLF).
He added that Rajapakse did not take their warning of the danger in calling for a snap poll to secure a third term. However, the former SLFP leader hadn’t been receptive to such warnings and went ahead with a project resulting in dire consequences. It was unfair to blame the former President’s defeat on Tamils and Muslims.
