Bollywood being rocked by Tamil Cinematographer – NATTI

Bollywood being rocked by Tamil Cinematographer – NATTI
Nattialias Natarajwon millions of audience’s heart with his amazing performance in his last movie named ‘SathurangaVettai’.. His name can be expanded as ‘NatarajanSubramaniam’..Presently, he is the most wanted Cameraman in the Bollywood industry and now has turned out to be the greatest sought out actor..
He has played the role of a ‘Baddie Police’ in his recent release named ‘KathamKatham’.. He, who has been walking in a ‘one way’ by carving a niche for himself with his unique style of Cinematography, has also easily managed to get applause for portraying a ‘baddie’ role.. We met him on the March month’s fascinating evening that was jubilant with mesmerizing sunset..
Lets now chat wit him..
How did you become a cinematographer?
I’m basically from Paramakudi..I was eight years old when our family relocated to Chennai for the sake of our education.. I had all my studies in Chennai only.. I had a desperate passionate on Camera.. Once, one of my distant relative had bought camera and I used to roam around his place, just to see it and to touch it.. Then one day he gave it to me and told me to take snaps.. I used to capture pictures in all the different ways I know, took its print and used to show it to him.. It’s a digital world now ; but on those days, 56rupees was required to buy a film roll.. It happened to be a really very tought task for me to save each and every penny.. I had such fascination for camera and I used  to watch many movies..
I was roaming around like that, and for the first time, I joinedRanga as his assistant and later on moved to P.R. Vijayalakshmi.. He gave me a new name ‘Natti’ and then I joined my friend U.K. Senthil Kumar..  I walked on step by step like this to become a Cinematographer..
How did you enter Bollywood?
North India pays good value and recognition for our technicians.. They don’t hesitate to take in those who are really talented..I have worked in a lumpsome of advertisements and music videos with almost all the Heroes and Cricketers.. They had actually seen my work in them and finally called me there.. I went there and worked in almost 16 Hindi movies and to name a few – ‘Last Train to Mahakali’, ‘Paanch’, ‘Black Friday’, ‘Parineeta’, ‘Jab we Met’, ‘Raanjhnaa’, and including the recent release ‘Holiday’..I have worked in different kind of Movie Budgets that ranges from 8 Crores to 80 Crores.. Each and everything were extremely distinctive and I have learnt a lot through my experiences..
We have heard that Bollywood makes movies in a very slow fashion?
It was like that in olden days, but now Bollywood is all a complete Corporate World..Presently, whenever they launch a new movie, they announce the release date and perform the Pooja rituals of the new movie’s kickoff.. Hence everything is preplanned and then is finished within the estimated time limit..
What is the difference between our and their process of Film Making?
Everything is Corporate there, while its not quite successful here.. Mostly Hindi movies are ‘out and out’fun filled and entertaining.. Only very few serious efforts are made with respect to scripts because they have a very huge Business market and hence they make a film which would be absolutely entertaining.. Films can’t be made by having a cartman or a mechanic as the lead characters.. We can’t even imagine to make a movie like our ‘Kaadhal’ and ‘Vazhakkuenn 18/9’.. They welcome only Fun – filledcolorful  Family dramas.. Love is not a problem there.. People from different backgrounds are allowed to marry with ease, hence they are quite free from facing caste and society related problems.. But here, there are definitely a lots of experimental productions happening in the industry with respect to the story-line and to the surprise, its very well being welcomed and recognized by the audience as well..
Capturing the real world beauty, recordineverything by admiring it and giving a beautiful cameramantouch  –  which is ur Style?
I like both – to Capture the real world beauty in the presence of natural lights and to record by admiring each and everything within the Camera lens.. I portray my work in the manner with which its expected as per the script and screenplay and its basically decided upon the screenplay and budget..
Was acting your ‘secret dream’?
I really never had any such thoughts or dreams..I always wished to portray myself as the most able cameraman by working in different genre of movies.. I used to receive acting offers right from the time when I was working as an assistant cameraman, but I kept all those aside and moved on with my work.. My first movie was ‘Naalai’ and I happened to act in it because the movie’s male actor walked off from it at the last minute.. I didn’t have anyother option and unexpectedly was made to enact the character..
Hence my entry into the acting field was purely accidental.. Then I made my production debut with the movie ‘Chakkaraviyugam’ and I acted in it, followed by ‘Milaga’, ‘MuthukkuMuthaaga’, ‘Sathurangavettai’ and the recent release ‘KathamKatham’..
How far are you confident on yourself as an actor?
Its quite true that when I was acting for the first time, I was very hesitant and tensed, and later I used to give marks by myself for my performances so that I can improve myself in my forthcoming ventures.. Sometimes I would feel that I could have done much better than I had  actually given..
Can it be said that ‘Sathurangavettai’ has taken you to a long distance as an actor?
‘Sathurangavettai’ has definitely given me a wide fan base and a broad spectrum of recognition as an actor.. I enjoyed portraying the character.. I happened to meet many people after acting in the movie; like if i had met 10 people, 4 people among them had an experience of getting cheated by fraudsters in similar manners and they used to share it with me..If it had not happened with them, they used to explain something that was faced by their friends or relatives..
Which is your preference – Cinematography or Acting?
Now I’m working as the Cameraman in the movie ‘Puli’ and though I was getting with many movie offers, I was eagerly waiting to take part in the movie and to be its crew member.. Working with Vijay Sir is such an unforgettable experience as he has huge respects for the technicians working in his movie.. ‘Puli’ will surely turn out to be aMass Entertainer.. With respect to Cinematography, 2 Movies from Bollywood are in queue and as far as acting in concerned, I have signed up with ‘Utharavu Maharaja’, ‘Gunduidli care of Kumbakonam’ and in two more yet to be titled movies as well..  I concentrate only in acting wherein I’m an actor, rather I don’t consider about camera in such cases..As far as the question of giving preference to cinematography and acting is concerned, I would love to be a successful and creative cameraman because it gives me the feel of self – satisfaction and  creative experience.. Even if I happen to continue acting in the future, I’ll never give up myactual passion named Cinematography..
Who is your desire in acting?
Nothing specific is like that.. I’m learning with the course of time.. I expect each and every movie and character to be different from one another..It should never make the audience to get bored and it should be always loaded with Masala Fragrance in a complete fresh manner..
